The Orcs: magical creatures in Sardinia

Since time immemorial, orcs have been synonymous with enormous sized bogeys.

In Sardinia, there are numerous places whose denomination binds in some way to the orcs.

There are thirty-six nuraghe, various giants’ tombs and menhirs called domo , tumba or pedra de s’orcu.

Near Siddi, in the Marmilla, there is a giant tomb called Domu and S’Orcu (the orc house) to which various fantastic stories are linked.

One tells of an ogre who would have dug a long tunnel with the intention of reaching the church of the town to steal the treasure that was kept there. But, having dug too deep, instead of coming to the church, he came to hell. There, a huge serpent-looking devil made him a mouthful.

Every Sardinian child who lived in central Sardinia was afraid of the orcs. The sons of shepherds, in the old days, when they brought the sheep to graze near Sa Domu and S’Orcu, put the grass inside every bell of every sheep, to avoid waking up the orcs with the noise and ending up be their meal.

But there is a version of the orcs a little better: it is said that no one has ever seen an ogre drink the water, that is to do a simple and daily action, as the orcs go to drink only in the waterfalls, not to scare humans at the river.
